From They're a Weird Mob to Lucky Miles, humour has helped us engage with the newcomers in a fast-evolving postwar Australia. At its best, the Pizza phenomenon - the films and TV show - introduces us to a mostly migrant mix from Lebanese, Italian, Islander, Asian and other backgrounds.
Tonight's episode, "Car wash", signals the start of the fifth series. So the creators of this comic show are presumably doing something right. But while we may laugh along at leery jokes of characters who work or meet at Bobo the pizza chef's new shop in a suburb called Hashfield Valley, it is not nearly as confronting as jokily foreshadowed in a preamble announcing changes - a new name, Aussie Pizza, Habib to be called Harry, Pauly to be Bluey, Chong Phat as Charlie, and so on - after alleged complaints about breaches of "ethnic, integration and media ownership laws". "What do you think this is, Home and Away?" a character demands, citing the popular whitebread soap.
If there are misgivings about this episode in which Bobo is so desperate to sell pizzas that he offers a car-wash service, it will be that the heavy-handed humour, much about a new girlfriend who turns out to be a porn star ("a chick with big bazookas", as one fella puts it), fails to hold us.
Jonah Takalua, the Tongan class clown in Chris Lilley's Summer Heights High, shines by comparison, only in contrast with the prissy drama teacher Mr G and private schoolgirl, Ja'mie King. Though Bobo's mother is off elsewhere to find him a "nice, pure Italian girl", Pizza tonight is too self-contained, with too little tension between the goings on in Hashfield and the other, mainstream Australia that it sets itself up against.
